Of the five Old Spanish Missions in San Antonio, Mission San Jose is the one that will most fully allow one to imagine how the missions functioned. Established in 1720, it was the second mission built in San Antonio (The first was the famous Alamo which was built in 1718). The missions were built to foster the growth and acceptance of Spanish Culture and the Catholic Religion in what was then referred to as The New World. The Spanish wished to make acculturated New World citizens out of the Native Americans. A quick look around the south side of San Antonio certainly gives one the impression that the Spanish missionaries attained a large degree of success in pursuit of this goal.
