Hey Jodie, so true about Agro's wonderful coffee and atmosphere! I've been going there for years for its artist cafe vibe and also as a meeting place for gallery board meetings. And their yam fries are killer!

Looking for a way to escape the hurlyburly of holiday shopping crowds at Granville Island this season? Why not sneak down Railspur Alley and duck into Agro Cafe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an oasis of tranquillity and coffee with a conscience. The patio's pretty much toast by now, but the room is filled with natural light, and there's a lovely loft upstairs just perfect for a secret rendezvous on the sofa. Channel your inner artiste, as the friendly granola vibe extends to the clientele,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], largely drawn from nearby Emily Carr U. What really sets this place apart however is the coffee. These guys don't just walk the talk, they RUN with it. Before they even opened, they set up their own NGO called AGRODEV to source organic fair-trade coffee from small farm co-operatives in Central/South America and Africa. Then they import the beans and roast them on site to ensure complete quality control over every aspect of production. They call this system Crop2Cup, and on their website are profiles of the different farms and villages they've nurtured over the last few years. From the bird-friendly jungle canopy of Mexico to the ecotourist nature preserve of Costa Rica, from Peru (think Inca--yes the real Inca tribe) to Bolivia (where recently emancipated labourers living in the shadow of their "colonial" slave-driving estate owners have started their own co-operative), the stories behind the agriculture are uplifting and intriguing. Most haunting is the courageous struggle of coffee farmers in Nicaragua to overcome the complete lack of infrastructure in this war-ravaged area and rebuild after a recent devastating hurricane. And Agro Cafe is there on the front lines helping--and so can everybody else, by stopping in during this holiday season and having a truly sustainable (and delicious by the way) cup of coffee in support of this noble pursuit. Might as well pick up a bag of beans too--they're 25% off from now until Dec 25,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!
