A Flash flood watch remains in effect through Wednesday night.
Ka’u residents had plenty of questions for Aina Koa Pono officials Monday night at a public hearing concerning a proposed biomass fuel plant in the Ka’u District.  Aina Koa Pono president Melvin Chiogioji told Naalehu residents that the plant could used solid waste,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], grease, and green waste, but  that officials prefer to use biomass from local landowners because it simplifies the project.  Chiogioji told the “Hawaii Tribune-Herald” that the company is considering doing an environmental assessment or an environmental impact statement to give community members the opportunity to comment on the project.
The final environmental assessment has been issued for the Old Kona Airport Master Plan.  Missing from the document is a funding source for the $42 million project.  The “Hawaii Tribune-Herald”  also reports that the plan has removed a proposed dog park and has recommended a reduction in the feral cat population to meet federal agency concerns. The final assessment also relies on an as yet unfunded regional part, at Kealakehe, to provide activities the county doesn’t want to support at the Old Kona Airport park.
Leadership of several key state Senate and House committees, along with several of the governor’s newly appointed cabinet members will visit Hawaii Island this coming Saturday and Sunday (26-27 February) to look at projects that are connected to high quality, clean-green job creation and to food and energy self-sufficiency.  Stops include the Kamuela Vacuum Cooling Plant, telescopes atop Mauna Kea, Puna Geothermal Venture, Green Point Nursery, Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center, Hamakua Springs Farms, and the Hu Honu bioenergy power plant.
A rising tide of need for affordable childcare alternatives for young families and concern over the care of Waikoloa’s large herd of feral donkeys,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], known affectionately as “KOna Nightengales”, will top the Waimea Community Association’s Town Meeting agenda at 5:15 p.m., Thursday, March 3rd,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the Waimea School cafeteria.  The panel discussion will include representatives of Early Head Start, PATCH, and the federally funded Child Care Connection.  Friends of the Malama Waikoloa Nightingales organization and Waimea veterinarian Dr. Brady Bergin will brief the community on recent progress in managing and re-homing the feral donkeys.
A man, who was out swimming with a friend in waters between Maukona and Kapaa Park Monday morning, was struck by a boat and rendered unconscious.  The boat’s personnel pulled the man out of the water,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], called EMS, and took the victim to the Mahukona pier.  Fire rescue crews found the man unconscious, barely breathing, and suffering from lacerations from the boat’s propeller to his head, shoulders, and arm areas.  The victim was taken to the North Hawaii Community Hospital by helicopter.
